Presentation of: LE VILLAGE DE MATHEFLON

Its peaceful location, nestling in the meander of the lazy Loir as it makes its way towards Angers, belies its feudal past which dates back to the dark and violent days of the Middle Ages. Following the death of King Charlemagne in 814, his empire was dismembered; Breton and Norman raiders invaded the region with Charles II (Charles the Bald) ransacking everything in his path.

In the lower parts of the Loire Valley, he captured the castle at Villevêque... it is a time of disaster and confusion. Amid this chaos, Fulk III (Count of Anjou) built a series of fortresses to defend the region, these included sites at Briollay, La Roche and Matheflon.

Originally a simple wooden dungeon, it dominated the Loir. Although it has long since disappeared, the village itself remains testament to its importance and includes many picturesque and historical sites to visit including the renovated watermill that dates back almost 1000 years!.

Rich in scenery, heritage and locations of interest and recreation, it's a great place to take a long walk or hike. You can download 'La Grande boucle du Loir' route here.
