At an awards ceremony held in London, Fontevraud l’Hotel took the top spot for ‘Architecture – Adaptive Re-Use’. The prize, part of the prestigious European Hotel Design Awards (EHDA 2014), recognises the project’s high standards and reflection of the architectural heritage of the building, which stands at the heart of Europe’s largest monastic site.
The award is also a testament to the local business and artisan community who worked together to refurbish the hotel. The project uses a selection of materials to create both balance and respect for its history, while at the same time, meeting the expectations of today’s demanding guests.
In the former chapel, the new i-Bar is an interactive experience where guests can take a journey through time while enjoying a drink. The old refectory is now an open dining space overlooking the cloisters, and the bedrooms have taken the spirit of the monks’ cells and created modern but uncluttered spaces.
All the hotel furnishings, equipment and accessories were conceived and created specifically for the hotel and its restaurant. To enhance the experience of guests, the hotel’s lighting and acoustics offer a peaceful refuge from the buzz and pace of everyday life.
This historical monument has returned to its past: providing an environment where you can rediscover tranquillity.
