Wherever you travel to the Pays de La Loire, you’ll discover châteaux, small and large, some privately owned and many open to the public:

The château of Craon in the Mayenne , a magnificent privately owned property where you can stay and be treated like a VIP guest sharing the owner’s home.

 
There is also Terre Neuve Château (Fontenay-le-Comte ) in the Vendée . This beautiful château is still lived in by the descendents of Octave de Rochebrune. During your visit, you will see some of the best art, furniture and clothing of the XVII and XVIII centuries.

 
The château of Plessis-Bourré , near Angers in Maine-et-Loire is a beautiful turreted castle which has been featured in several films.

 
Also worth a visit is the château at Sainte-Suzanne in the Mayenne. Not only is this a magnificent castle, but the surrounding village has been voted one of the most beautiful villages in France.

 
A visit to the château at Montreuil Bellay is like stepping back in time. An impressive sight rising amongst the vineyards, this is the last of the 32 walled towns that once graced Anjou during the Middle Ages. From its rocky promontory, the town, built by Foulques Nerra in the 11th century, has preserved its medieval character, with its imposing château and fortified centre.

 
The château at Montgeoffrey   is unique in France and perfectly depicts the life of the Maréchal de Contades. Built in 1772, the original furniture and decorations have been preserved by descendants of the family who still reside there. The park and the gardens are also open to the public.

The privately owned château at Le Lude is also worth a visit, it is the most northerly of the Châteaux de la Loire.
