This peninsula stretches out toward the sea. Its coastline is both rocky and sandy with some 50 km of beautiful beaches.
Also known as “the Dutch beauty” because two-thirds of its land is below sea level, the island has been accessible by car since 1971 via a toll-free bridge. A more romantic approach is by the 17th-century Le Gois Causeway where, when the tide is out, you can see hosts of shellfish gatherers. You can see the oysters which have just been gathered, pick out your favourites and taste them right by the water!
This sandy landscape is littered with mills, mimosas, small woods, inlets, quaint ports and old sailing ships – a stimulation of all your senses. Constant surprises await whether you’re walking, riding a horse or cycling. Noirmoutier also has several oyster farms and its salt marshes brim with life. The new generation of salt marsh workers are delighted to share their ancient secrets.
