Guérande 11.05.2013

Guérande is a beautiful medieval town in the Loire-Atlantique overlooking striking black and white landscapes created by the peat and salt marshes. It is one of 120 'Ville et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire' (Towns and Regions of Art and History) and at 1,343 metres long, the fortified town wall is one of the best preserved in France.

Entering the gates is like stepping into a fairytale world; more than a monument to the past, this bustling little town is a contrast of perfectly preserved architecture, trendy little boutiques, art galleries, buzzing restaurants and cafés. Local craftsman produce unique handmade items such as jewellery, chocolates and toys. Restaurant choices are varied ranging from pizza to fresh seafood in both traditional and contemporary environments.

To immerse yourself in local culture visit the Musée du Pays de Guérande and learn about  traditional furniture, costumes and art.

Spend time wandering the cobbled streets and taking in the impressive churches and fortifications, then treat yourself to a break and watch the world go by.

If you can bear to leave, venture outside the walls and take a trip to the salt marshes (Les Marais Salants); marvel at the 15th century 'Moulin du Diable' (Devil's mill) or visit the Château de Careil, a 'Monument historique' featuring architecture across 4 centuries from Medieval to Renaissance times.

Guérande is a magical town that captures both your imagination and your heart....
