A city known the world over for its 24 Hour Race, Le Mans needs no introduction.
The race began in 1923 and has been drawing huge crowds ever since. Every 2 years is the Le Mans classic and it’s well worth waiting for. It’s my favourite! Original cars or identical models to those that participated between 1923 and 1979 compete on the 24 hour track. It’s more than just the racing – you can see more than 8,000 vintage and prestige cars on display.

You can also visit the museum devoted to this famous race, depicting its most glorious moments. Here you will see the heroes and winners of the 24 hour race, live the legend and immerse yourself in the ambiance of the race. And it’s not just about the glory, the ‘behind-the-scenes’ effort is immense: you can learn about all the professionals and volunteers who make this legendary event happen. You will see how the Sarthe and, in particular, the Bollée family was a driving force in automotive innovation. The Mancelle, invented by Bollée, is the oldest car in the museum. You’ll be dazzled by metal from all over Europe and also America. The sophistication of some of these vintage cars is astonishing! One of my favourites is the 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado. It would be worthy of any modern day VIP or celebrity. It’s full of gizmos! The lights dim automatically when the car is in cruising mode, it has a V8 engine, automatic gearbox, power steering, air-conditioning, drinking goblets, a glove compartment with a silver cigarette box and beauty accessories including a bottle of Arpège perfume. Perfect for all aspiring divas! And not all the drivers men! One of the cars includes some pink panels, allegedly to alert the other drivers that a woman was on the way! I am not sure how women drivers will react to this!
The visit is great for families; ‘Leon’ the museum mascot introduces special kids’ events and helps children discover the history of the 24 hour race in an interactive way.

As they enter the museum kids can pick up a book to aid them on their journey of discovery. Leon the mascot asks them questions about the exhibits on show. This little book will keep kids (and big kids) happy for hours!
