The Île d'Yeu is a famous fishing port, with the picturesque ambience that is typical of true islands.
Leave your car on dry land, bring along your stout shoes, hire a bike and forget all your cares… this island offers lots of sunshine, revitalising sea spray, and invigorating winds. And the natives are friendly; they wouldn't leave this paradise for anything in the world!
The hilly, rocky southwest is reminiscent of islands off the coast of Brittany. The northeast has a gentler landscape, with a line of sand dunes providing safe, lovely beaches that are ideal for families.
Nature is at its best showcasing migratory birds, rare flowers, megaliths and imposing cliffs. You can explore the 14th Century old castle, the picturesque ports and the fishing hamlets with their small white cottages and brightly painted shutters. Seafood plays a starring role in the island’s cuisine, including tuna rillettes and pâté and smoked fish.
To getto Yeu, take the ferry from Fromentine or Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie; thecrossing takes 30 to 60 minutes.
