Fontenay-le-Comte and Mervent are shimmering gems set in the rolling Vendéen countryside.

Fontenay-le-Comte is an historic town, one of the prettiest in the Vendée and is listed as one of the "Plus Beau detours de France". Once a former fishing port, as the sea receded and the land was drained for agriculture, this historic town was stranded on the River Vendée. The heart of the town is a conservation area with buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and the remnants of a medieval castle. Journey back in time by way of the 'mille and d'histoire' walk travelling through winding streets past magnificent mansions, town-houses, square and fountains. Discover, not one but two châteaux and an impressive cathedral.

The Château of Terre-neuve is a perfect setting for the collection of period costumes and furniture housed there and the Château Fontenay is home to the communes public treasury. The Cathedral of Notre Dame showcases stunning stained glass windows and a steeple that is a beacon standing over the surrounding countryside.

A leap into the 21st century reveals a vibrant abundance of shops, restaurants and sporting and cultural events.

In contrast, the tiny town of Mervent is a stones-throw away from this cultural centre and stands on a rocky outcrop in the heart of more than 12,000 acres of forest. You can visit the church dating back to the 5th century, the Château of Citardière and, perhaps, treat yourself to a luxury stay at the Logis de Cornelière in the company of charming hosts, the Baron and Baroness Jean-Raymond de Larocque Latour.

Whether you prefer land or water or fancy a bit of both, you'll find plenty of ways to pass the time: walking, hiking, cycling, fishing and all kinds of water sports. Just remember: 'Keep Calm' and start relaxing....
